Accidents happen – maybe you forgot to take out your hearing aids before a shower, or moisture from sweat has affected the performance of your devices. Maybe you dropped them after taking them out, or they suffered some damage after an accident.
Your hearing aids are more than your way back to hearing the life you love; they’re a way for you to enhance your overall quality of life and well-being with the benefits of strong hearing health.
If your devices are whistling or you’re struggling to hear with them, there are a few fixes you can try at home before bringing them to us for a professional check-up.
A Factory Reset
The classic “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” works so well for a reason! Sometimes a factory reset can fix issues with connecting to your smartphone or issues with no sound coming through.
Put your hearing aids into their charging case to turn them off and let them sit for a minute or two while turned off. Then, remove them from the case and put them back in. Quite often, a few minutes to “recover” can help address a few different hearing aid issues.
Swap the Ear Domes
For hearing aids with parts that go into your ear, the ear domes (similar to earbuds) send amplified sound into your ears to hear – but these one-size-fits-all domes can often fit incorrectly, leading to leaking sound, whistling and feedback, as well as discomfort.
Your hearing aids should come with a few ear domes to swap out with; try changing the domes and see how that affects your listening experience. Sometimes a more snug fit can assist with leaking sound issues and feeling like your hearing aids are about to fall out.
Clean Your Devices
Moisture from sweat and earwax can sometimes get into the casing of your hearing aids, leading to feedback and muffled sound, as well as issues with the fit. Give your hearing aids a quick clean with a dry microfiber cloth to remove excess wax or moisture and see a noticeable difference in listening comfort.
Sometimes the wax guards, which catch earwax from getting into your devices, can get filled up and lead to other issues with sound and feedback; swap the wax guards for new ones and see how the sound feels much clearer.
