Professional hearing care can be transformative. I may be a bit biased, but I’d recommend it for everyone! Being able to hear properly can benefit your mental and physical health and improve your relationships with others.
Hearing care and hearing aids can require a significant financial investment, especially if your hearing loss is severe. Here at Dion Hearing Centre, we would never want financial constraints to hold someone back from getting the care they deserve. That’s why we offer service package options that allow you to pay for exactly what you need, and not what you don’t. The good news is that you may qualify for financial assistance.
What Types of Programs Are Available to People in Ontario?
One of the reasons many people delay seeking treatment for hearing loss is the financial investment. Here in Ontario, some programs can cover the costs for you. The amount of coverage will depend on the program and whether or not you meet certain criteria.
Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC): VAC provides coverage for individuals diagnosed with hearing loss by healthcare professionals based on an audiogram report. It must be a loss of 100 decibels calculated over speech frequencies for either ear or a 50-decibel loss plus in both ears. Coverage includes hearing tests, hearing aids/accessories, and assistive devices.
Assistive Devices Program (ADP): To qualify for ADP, you must be an Ontario resident, have a valid health card and documented hearing loss, and need a hearing device for over six months. ADP covers up to $500 per device.
Workers Safety Insurance Board (WSIB): The WSIB covers work-related hearing loss. You’ll need to submit a claim for reimbursement.
Non-Insured Health Benefits Program (NIHB): Individuals must reside in Canada and meet one of the below criteria:
- An Inuk who is recognized by an Inuit land claim organization
- A First Nations person registered under the Indian Act
- A child under two of a parent who is an NIHB-eligible client
Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP): Benefits are available to those eligible for Extended Health benefits and ODSP recipients, spouses, and dependents.
If you don’t qualify for any of the above programs, many insurance companies also offer benefits that include coverage for hearing care. Navigating insurance benefits can be confusing, so the best thing you can do is call your provider and have a conversation about what your coverage entails.
